ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (AP) -- A powerful 7.6-magnitude earthquake near the Pakistan-India border Saturday reduced villages to rubble, triggered landslides and flattened an apartment building. More than 3,000 people were killed in both nations, and a Pakistan army spokesman called the devastation "a national tragedy."
PANABAJ, Guatemala (Reuters) - Around 1,400 people died under a huge mudslide in the Guatemalan village of Panabaj that was triggered by torrential rains from Hurricane Stan, the fire brigade said on Saturday.
"There are no survivors here. It happened more than 48 hours ago. They are dead," brigade spokesman Mario Cruz told Reuters.
The landslide engulfed the Maya Indian village on Wednesday in a fatal quagmire of mud, rock and trees, in places 40 feet thick.
