What stuns me is that the same newspaper who hired Wally Hall (and I presume, inexplicably PAYS him), also hired Philip Martin.
One submits columns that very often contain sentences that...well, AREN'T. It's just some of the worst writing I've ever seen. The ideas may be there, but if you can't express them articulately, how in the world do you get a job as a journalist?
The other, I think is probably a pretty cool guy to hang out and watch movies or talk books with, but his columns all too often tend to focus less on their topic and more on how erudite is their author, and how large his vocabulary. Now, I love words. I think we're losing our words in this country, and need to reclaim them. But honestly, when you're doing a short review for an inconsequential movie for an Arkansas daily newspaper, why, oh why, would you choose to use the word "risible" instead of just saying "funny"?
Rant over. Sorry. Burning soapbox now.
