Danger
This could be trouble:
Anyone need a pardon?
WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Bush will undergo a routine colonoscopy Saturday and temporarily hand presidential powers over to Vice President Dick Cheney, the White House said.

Huh?
They have mosquitoes down in the euphemistically termed "River Valley." Lana Labrousse of 40/29 sez a good way to avoid them is to "stay inside between dawn and dusk, when they're most active." Never mind that most people can't avoid going outside during the daylight hours. She got it bass-ackwards.

They hate your children
NYT:
Why? Tony Fratto: “This will have the effect of encouraging many to drop private coverage, to go on the government-subsidized program.”
WASHINGTON, July 14 — The White House said on Saturday that President Bush would veto a bipartisan plan to expand the Children’s Health Insurance Program, drafted over the last six months by senior members of the Senate Finance Committee.
The vow puts Mr. Bush at odds with the Democratic majority in Congress, with a substantial number of Republican lawmakers and with many governors of both parties, who want to expand the popular program to cover some of the nation’s eight million uninsured children.
Why? Tony Fratto: “This will have the effect of encouraging many to drop private coverage, to go on the government-subsidized program.”

Barry Bearak
One of our favorite NYTimes writers has returned to a place he knows well:
Read every story he files.
Afghanistan surely has made some progress toward development, but most often the nation seems astride some pitiable rocking horse, with each lurch forward inevitably reversed by the backward spring of harsh reality.
Read every story he files.

Stupid
Whoever's writing the scripts that the anchors at 40/29 mindlessly read keeps referring to this trial as the "murder trial of an Arkansas beauty queen." She's the alleged victim. Her ex-boyfriend is accused of killing her.
